Tesla might be known for its electric cars, but its new battery system has the potential to change the housing industry.

The company unveiled what might be the world’s largest lithium-ion battery power system. Not only does the system span 396 stacks of batteries, it also emits enough energy to power 2,500 homes for a whole day. That energy is being used to power the Southern California Edison power grid, and it’s one of the first projects of its kind.

There are drawbacks, however, to Tesla’s power system. Lithium batteries are expensive to produce and buy—analysts predict that the costs of similar projects would need to fall by 50 percent in order to become profitable in a state like California.
