The 10 Best & Worst Value Cities for Homebuyers

To buy there or not, that is the question…

Florida vs. California. Both are great beach states. Which state would you choose? If it comes down to the value when figuring out the better place to buy, Florida wins hands down.

According to this study by Zillow, both the Punta Gorda and Cape Coral areas in Florida rank as the top two places in the U.S. for buyers right now. On the other end of the spectrum, and other end of the country, the San Francisco and San Jose areas are both ranked as the top two worst in terms of value.

This study ranked markets based on if buyers or sellers had more negotiating power. The study also shows the median percentage price cut in the market and how long the homes are on the market. Zillow researched over 700 cities and regions and rated them according to this data.

“In competitive markets, such as San Francisco and the surrounding area, there is a high demand for homes so they don’t stay on the market very long. Sellers have the power,” said Kelsey Wickman, PR Manager for Zillow Group. “On the contrary, in places like Punta Gorda, the days on market are much longer so buyers have more power.”

The data below shows the rest of the top 10 best/worst value cities and regions. One thing to note is that Zillow doesn’t want to position these regions and cities as the “worst” places to live, but rather where sellers have more power in the transaction than the buyers. That preface makes sense, as California definitely doesn’t seem like the worst place to live!

Take a look and see if your city made the list.
