With 2017 quickly winding down, before you know it a new year with new goals and resolutions will be upon us – not only focusing on personal goals but home improvement goals as well. On the heels of holiday spending, your budget may be tight, but that doesn’t mean you still can’t incorporate the beauty of Pantone’s color of the year for 2018 into your home and feel like you did a remodeling project.

The Pantone color trends for the year 2018 are iridescence, intense colors like minion yellow and bright pink, neutral metallic, along with subtle hues such as Elderberry and Hawthorne Rose. Plus, Pantone named Ultra Violet as the official color of 2018.

We had the opportunity to sit down with Anthony Michael, Owner of Anthony Michael Interior Design, Ltd and a top 10 Chicago design firm and four-time Best of Houzz Award recipient, to get his thoughts on the 2018 trends many will look to incorporate into their homes.

One of the most simplistic and cost-effective ways to incorporate colors of the year into your living space is through paint.

“Paint is a simple, inexpensive change as it affects your overall mood and wellbeing and can be easily swapped out whereas a sofa is more than likely there to stay,” said Michael.

Though light blue or dark red may be your favorite colors, that doesn’t mean they will go together or that you should put them together in your home. One of the biggest mistakes people make when painting their homes in regards to color is going too light.

“Be bold, go for strong emotional colors,” Michael says. “Deep colors can be calming, but also energizing.”

When painting, it’s also important to consider the space. The old adage has always been that dark colors make rooms appear smaller, but Anthony Michael says that is simply not the case. However, it is important to not paint the walls and trim the same color.

“Dark colors can make a tiny room feel like a jewel box. We use eggshell on walls and satin on trim – black trim moldings can be awesome if done right,” said Michael.

When using the 2018 Pantone colors you do not have to stick to just paint, as there are other ways to incorporate the latest color trends into your home. For example, try adding the “colors of the year” by way of throw pillows, upholstery, a pouf, ottoman or even a large piece of art.

Remember you don’t always have to stick with the trends as they may not speak to you or your personality.

“Color should speak to you and make you respond emotionally,” Michael suggests.

As an alternative, if you want to interject the color of the year into your space, try it in small doses first like a throw pillow to test to see how it goes with your existing pieces. If you like it, gradually add to it and make adjustments along the way. Most importantly – have fun with it!
