Bloomberg: Apple Takes On Amazon and Google with New HomePod Speaker

The new product launch comes as demand for smart home technology climbs.

Apple is throwing its name in the ring when it comes to tech companies competing to have the best voice-controlled home speaker. This week, the company unveiled its new HomePod, which is designed to be the next step in smart home technology.

According to a recent Bloomberg article, the HomePod emphasizes its connection to music. And unlike Amazon’s new Echo Snow device, the HomePod does not come with a screen. Instead, users will be able to use Siri through the speaker. But purchasing HomePod won’t come cheap for potential buyers—it’s price tag comes in at $349. That’s almost double the price of Amazon and Google’s competing products.

Even with a higher price tag, Apple’s expected to use HomePod to diversify. Demand for internet-connected speakers and other forms of smart home technology is rising—shipments of smart home speakers jumped nearly 600 percent year-over-year to 4.2 million in the fourth quarter of 2016.
