The project will be the fourth major high-rise apartment building in the neighborhood.
MAC Properties is planning to build a new 27-story apartment building in East Hyde Park. The high-rise, which will be located at 1600 E. 53rd St., is set to take over for the parking lot currently in its place.
DNA Info Chicago notes that the project is a big move for Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood—it will be the fourth major high-rise apartment building in the neighborhood since a drought in new residential construction. That drought lasted nearly 20 years, until City Hyde Park was built in 2014.
Peter Cassel, director of community development for MAC, says the building is going up because there’s a demand for Hyde Park buildings to be both contemporary and accessible for seniors. He said in an interview with DNA Info, “It’s appealing to people who want to age in place and whatever changes then come mean they can stay at home.”
